A new project to collect waste glass such as bottles and jars, and put it to good use in building work, has been was launched.

The project by non-governmental organization Sustainability for Seychelles aims to divert glass waste from landfill sites and recycle it. Project coordinator Iris Carolus met its key partners – the Landscape and Waste Management Agency, the Environment Department, STAR, the Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association, United Concrete Products Seychelles and the Ecotourism Society of Seychelles – to brief them.

Meeting at the Climate and Environment Services Division, they discussed ways to set up a national system to collect glass waste such as wine and spirit bottles, jars and broken glass. Instead of being dumped, they will be collected and stockpiled then crushed and used as a replacement for gravel or coral fill in the concrete blocks for building projects.

Hotels and restaurants are the main target group for glass waste collection. But a voluntary collection programme will be carried out at Anse Royale, where special bins will be placed in certain areas.

Mrs Carolus said the project aims to help develop a culture of voluntary recycling among members of the community. It is one of four environmental projects funded by the Regional Programme for the Sustainable Management of the Coastal Zones of the Indian Ocean Countries (Recomap).
